Awka—Nze Joe Muoghali, Chairman of the Young Progressives Party, YPP, in Nanka Ward 1 of Anambra State's Orumba North Local Government Area, was assassinated by masked men on Saturday night, just hours after hosting a meeting of YPP stakeholders in the area ahead of a rerun election for the Orumba North and South federal constituencies.
The Court of Appeal had ordered a rerun election in Nanka Ward 1 between Princess Chinwe Nnabuife of the YPP, who was declared the winner of the February 25 National Assembly election, and her opponent, Chief Okwudili Ezenwankwo of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Nnabuife, who was heartbroken by the murder, claimed that after the Court of Appeal's decision to rerun the poll, she came down and told the late Muoghali to organize a meeting of stakeholders and supporters in the Ward as part of the election preparations.
"We held the meeting on Saturday, after which we attended the wedding of a YPP executive member in the same Nanka Ward 1," Nnabuife explained. Following that, I departed.
"I received a distress call about an hour after I got home, saying that the party chairman had been shot by some men wearing masks." The perpetrators allegedly called him a saboteur three times before firing on him.
"He was immediately rushed to the hospital, but he did not survive." So, what is the fate of the residents of Nanka Ward 1 as we prepare for the court-ordered rerun election?
"Who knows what their next target will be now that they have killed my party chairman." With this circumstance, how safe is it for me to go to Nanka for the rerun? And how secure are my party's members and supporters in the neighborhood?
"I urge security operatives to wade into this matter immediately to unravel the circumstances surrounding the murder and those behind this heinous killing of YPP chairman in Nanka."
Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, stated that he was unaware of the occurrence.
According to Nnabuife, Nze Muoghali was a wonderful man and urged that those behind the brutal murder should be forced to face the full weight of the law.
"While I want the rerun to go ahead as planned, I also want security personnel and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to be aware of what I am up against ahead of the rerun."
"As things stand, I can't even go to Nanka to campaign unless I'm surrounded by DSS soldiers and men." But why are they terrified of me even in their own village?
